Level 1 – Thai Massage
Thai Yoga Massage combines elements of massage, yoga, and acupressure. It works to clear blockages in the body by applying a healing touch to the affected pressure points. The technique of massage and stretching releases tension in the limbs and muscles promoting relief from pain and improvement in flexibility. Once these blockages are removed, energy will flow freely in the body. Energy that flows freely will improve ailments and increase overall physical and mental health.
The massage is practiced on a shiatsu mattress on the floor or on a massage table. To give thee massage the practitioner uses hands, elbows and feet. A number of techniques such as applying pressure on the muscles and stretching are used to free the blockages in the body. Oil is normally not applied during the therapy session. The receiver of the massage is fully clothed wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt is best. At the end of each massage session you will feel relaxed, energized and balanced whether you are the giver or the receiver of thai massage.
This retreat will teach you how to give a 60 minute full body Thai Yoga Massage. You will not only learn the basics of this ancient technique, you will have plenty of time to exchange giving and receiving Thai Yoga Massage every day of the retreat.
The schedule below allows for ample time to learn Thai massage, receive massage and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Himalayas, Vashist and neighboring villages led by our guides so that you enjoy the full experience.

23th May: Arrival and Introduction To Thai Yoga Massage and Seated Series
Arrival in Amar House at Vashisht, check in time after 12.00 Noon.
We will begin an orientation that will get you acclimated to the village of Vashisht. The Yoga Massage class will begin by learning the history of thai massage, practice postures to safely give a thai massage, You will observe how to give the seated series. We will then each have time to give the seated massage series and receive a seated thai massage as we take turns practicing and receiving. Dinner with the Amar Family and then an evening meditation to conclude our first day.
24th May: Review Seated Thai Massage and Learn The Leg Series
Our first yoga class with our instructor is the perfect way to begin the day. Then enjoy a home cooked breakfast with the Amar Family. After breakfast we will review the seated thai massage postures, learn the leg series by observing, giving and receiving. Lunch will be on your own at one of the restaurants in the village allowing you to enjoy local food and international cuisine. At 2pm our guides will take you on a short hike to Jogini Falls and visit a sacred temple on the way. We will be back in time for family dinner and a meditation class to include the day.
25th May: Thai Massage Review and Learn Arms, Neck and Face
Yoga, Home cooked breakfast and then ready for Thai Massage Class. We will review seated postures, legs and then we are ready to observe, give and receive Thai massage of the arms and face and neck. Lunch on your own and then we will be ready for an amazing guided tour of traditional Himalayan villages across the Beas river.
26th May: Thai Massage Review and Back Series
Yoga, Home cooked breakfast and then ready for Thai Massage Class. At massage class we will observe then give and receive the Thai massage back series. We will then enjoy and afternoon rest day, you can practice Thai massage, go shopping for gifts or you have an option to hire a guide for rock climbing, canyoning or other adventure activities. After dinner at the family house we will continue our meditation practice.
267h May: Full Massage Series
Yoga, Home cooked breakfast and then ready for Thai Massage Class. We will take turns giving and receiving a full one hour massage as you follow along with the instructor. This completes our massage program and you are welcome to depart for your next destination in the afternoon or stay at the guest house and continue enjoying the relaxation of the Himalayas.
After this course you will receive a certification of completion from Open Lotus Yoga of level one Thai massage.
Ricky Heldt is the founder of Open Lotus Yoga In the United States. He is a Certified Integrative Yoga Therapy Instructor, Certified Astanga Yoga Teacher from Sivananda Ashram in India, Chair Yoga Instructor, Multiple Sclerosis Yoga Instructor, Reiki Master Instructor, Meditation Teacher and Thai Yoga Body Master Practitioner. He has been teaching and practicing healing arts for more than 20 years.
